High Ongar - St Mary

St Mary's was built around 1181. The church consists of a 12th century nave and a 13th century chancel built of flint rubble. The bell-tower, though in the 13th century style, was added in 1858 replacing a wooden tower with tall, shingled spire, which stood at the west end of the nave. The present tower contains a ring of six bells, the two oldest are by William Carter, 1610, and John Waylett, 1728. The main south doorway is original 12th century exemplifying characteristic Norman dog-tooth stone carving. The church is Grade I listed.
