Coggeshall - St Peter ad Vincula - Porch Roof

Inside the porch, the central boss of the elegant tierceron vault was changed from a Virgin and Child to a pelican, in 1869. There was an ancient belief that in times of famine, a mother pelican would wound herself in the breast in order to feed her young on her own blood. The self-sacrificial nature of this act led to the pelican being adopted as a Christian symbol.
