Chipping Ongar - St Martin of Tours

Chancel. The chancel arch was taken down and rebuilt in about 1350. In the chancel there are two original round-headed Norman windows, one at the east end of the north wall, the other opposite to it on the south wall. In 1284-5 John the Clerk of Ongar was killed by the clapper of the church bell, which fell upon him while he was ringing. God works in mysterious ways.
