The original medieval eaves of this church are low - 9 feet from the ground, but the 1885 rebuild incorporated a much higher and steeper roof. As a consequence the old 15th century shingled belfry with splay-foot spire looks disproportionately small. The church stands alone at the top of the hill,and now seems misplaced between the segments of modern urban sprawl around Benfleet and the A13.
