The nave and chancel were built around 1100, with a Norman tower added slightly later. On the west of the tower is a 2-storey porch added in the 15th century. This is unusual: such additions are usually an early Saxon motif, and may indicate that the porch was built on earlier foundations. There was a monastery in Wakering in the 7th century but whether this church was built on the monastery site is not known. The upper part or the porch was used as a priest's house. The broach spire is also 15th century.
